Santa Carla By Night

History of the Domain, Part VI

Part I - Part II - Part III - Part IV - Part V - Part VI

As John Stepped down the city was once again at a loss for leadership. The only viable candidates at that time were the Gangrel Angela and Oliver Banks of the unaligned Families. Both Cainites had their backers but it fell to the Primogen council to vote on who was the better choice. After much deliberation and interviewing of the candidates (it was Santa Carla after all), Angela of Clan Gangrel was chosen. As the Gangrel assumed the position, one of her most important items of city business was the destruction of a rouge werewolf, known as a Black Spiral Dancer. The Same who had killed her sire, Elias, the night Ace and Trevor and met their final deaths. Ironically, at the hands (more specifically claws) of said Gangrel. Luckily, the young prince had an ally in one Barrett S. Jones the III of clan Ventrue, who agreed to be her seneschal and instruct her in the ways of leadership.

With the death of Ace, clan Brujah fell apart, losing what limited prestige and honor it had possessed, though the entire surviving clan vowed vengeance on those that had been connected with the death of their respected Primogen. The first of these was Trey Atler of Clan Malkavian, who disappeared one night and was destroyed in an exploding car. It seems he somehow found his was into the trunk. So, along with the Werewolf, there was a killer on the loose and all the signs pointed to clan Brujah. Oliver, who was made Sheriff after his failed bid for Princedom, started to investigate, but couldn't, for the unlife of him, find the killer. His investigation continued for a few unfruitful weeks, coming to an end the same night as former prince John, single handily killed the rouge werewolf by chopping it's head off. From an anonymous tip-off, Lucas of Clan Brujah, formerly thought innocent by the sheriff, was found to be guilty of Trey's murder. The Brujah was promptly killed.

Things settled down from there, until a group of hunters entered the city, drawn there by the once again, illustrious sheriff Oliver. Whom had formerly been in the employment of the society of Leopold, the very group that plagued the city. Also at this time, an emissary from the Lupines on campus came to the city, wanting to talk of a limited peace agreement. As the city tried to cope with increasingly accurate hunter attacks, due to leaked information from one of their own, a mysterious kindred entered the city, calling himself Samuel and claiming to be of clan Malkavian.

As the city fought desperately to save itself from the marauding hunters the Prince seemed unable to control her populous or get rid of the threat of the hunters. Angela was increasingly absent and no clear plan of action to combat the hunters, besides staying in doors and practicing the Buddy system. At its climax, one of the Prince's own clan mates, one Galen who had been guilty of numerous breeches of the first, was torpor'd and captured by the Society. Miraculously, he was saved when the leader of the hunters was "reeducated" by the Mysterious stranger Samuel and the body of Galen returned. After which the hunters left Santa Carla.

This just left the treaty with Lupines, talks with the Prince's representative had failed to produce an actual agreement much to their dismay and annoyance of the still influential Primogen council. It was at this point that first rumblings of dissension started come from council. As time went on less action taken by against breeches traditions, became more disillusioned, until a vote no confidence in Angela. By June 2001 her short time as Prince of Santa Carla had come to an end.

Taking her place was the charismatic Toreador, Alexander Trident, Guild of Apollo. His reign started off bloody with both executions of home grown breaches, (perhaps most notable that of Galen of clan Gangrel who was notorious for escaping fate) as well as the presentation to the populous of the heads of previous blood hunted offends such as; alak al' Rahim (Cassette), Danny Anagee (Brujah), Solomon (Gangrel), Vincenzo "Enzo" Scarpacci and his childe "Pops" (Giovanni). It ended in a teary farewell, as Alex left Santa Carla to peruse "other interests".

After Alex Trident came the exceptionally short reign of Niccolio Ferrera, short even by Santa Carla standards. After approximately a month, his short stint as prince ended when Perdun Yusta'vovich, Tremere Justicar of the Camarilla called a judicial conclave. The result of the October 12th 2001 conclave left Niccolio convicted a collaborator of the Sabbat, and unable to hold office in any Camarilla domain with out the permission of an archon or above. His unlife was spared when Nicholas Hanson recently arrived Ventrue from Cologne Germany traded some of his status for the former Prince's unlife.

Shortly thereafter began the reign of Nicholas Hanson and his Seneschal the returning William Garcia. In January of 2002 Nicholas Hanson left Santa Carla under mysterious circumstances. Rumors floated about that was called away by those that he calls his, superiors for reasons unknown. What is know is that the Gangrel Sunday illegally ceased control of the domain, and killed those who threatened his power. A lesson in power learned too late by one Tony Chestnut of Clan Brujah who's head was shortly separated from it's body when he challenged praxis. Under Sunday's reign the number of kindred in the domain tumbled to a handful of brave kindred. Some meet final death at the hands of Sunday or his agents, the majority simply fled the domain out of a sense of fear, hopelessness and a political system that started and ended with the "Warlord" Sunday. No words can adequately express the depth of long term harm that this kindred did to the domain.

In April of 2002, political events beyond the boarders of Santa Carla gave the domain and it's residents a small degree of autonomy. Under Sunday's direct supervision, he allowed a Prince to be selected in a manor of his choosing. Long time resident, former Seneschal to Niccolio, and Keeper of Elysium to Nicholas Hanson, Arman De `Ange became that Prince.

In the Summer of 2002 Nikke Black, Childe of Jason Black Killed Karen of Clan Malkavian in a coup to become Prince of the Domain. She was intern killed by her Primogen council, led by her successor, the returning Kaergon Roshe. Kaergon had been the Sheriff under "Governor" Elizabeth, of Clan Nosferatu some years prier. The question then became, What would be the response of he who had sired both former princes Spencer and Nikke, Jason Black?

Before the year was out, so was the shamed Kaergon Roshe. He has become the focal point of the wrath of Jason Black. The Primogen council that had elevated Roshe to power had ... or would share in his fate. Over the next few months all those involved in the final death of Nikke Black would pay a toll in life boons, political humiliation and some with their unlives.

.In January of 2003, Marie Mercer-Renald of Clan Toreador was elevated to the position of Prince, claiming the title of "Princess". Along with Prince Mercer-Renald's reign came the revolving open door of the good graces of the Camarilla.

Princess Marie's reign was marked by the city's reorganization and the successful handling of a number of crises, ranging from the machinations of the Baali who at the time held Monterey, the presence of a small army of Inquistion hunters, to a major incursion by the Sabbat. Despite these and other challenges, this time was marked by the Final Deaths of relatively few Kindred. Masquerade breaches, which for years had been the bane of the city, slowly became less frequent, and those that did occur were quickly stifled and smothered.

After the Sabbat incursion that was allegedly motivated by the Tremere Clan's harboring of two Sabbat refugees, Princess Marie saw fit to banish the that Clan's Regent and ordered its Chantry closed. The Tremere's entire contingent left the city, destroying their own abandoned chantry to prevent others from learning their secrets. The matter was not fully resolved until several weeks later after a visit and negotiation with the Tremere Justicar lead to the clan's return. Lead by the returning Armand D'Ange, a former Prince ot Santa Carla, the clan quickly reasserted itself as a crucial part of the city's defenses.

In May of 2003, both Princess Marie and her Seneschal, Grifon Blackmore of Clan Ventrue were summoned away by the Camarilla under somewhat mysterious circumstances, mysterious in the sense that they were never fully explained to the populace of the city. Regardless, both left the city in a more stable state than when they found it.

Stewardship over the domain was turned over to Count Orlock, an elder of Clan Nosferatu who had successfully ruled a number of Camarilla cities in the p ast. After meeting with the Primogens of all seven clans, Orlock was formally declared Prince of Santa Carla. It was one of the most peaceful and untainted transitions of power the city had seen in years.
