History of the Domain Part IIThe toreador were early casualties in a clan war during the early and mid-90's, and lost most of their definitive leadership. Only to regain it, however briefly latter in the decade. The war caused heavy losses on many sides, neonate and elder alike. When Max suddenly disappeared, the lack of ancient and wise Kindred became very apparent. This only escalated the war as the ancillae, as they scrambled for power. The power vacuum caused by the clan war resulted in the rise of the Malkavian Balo to prince. Balo's change of personalities gave him free run of the city. The records from this time are vague, and few Kindred will speak of it, other than to swear or pray quietly. The 6th generation Toreador Jean-Vieve came into Santa Carla around the same Time Balo contracted a rather odd blood disorder. She promptly wrested the power to rule from him and he was exiled. By forging hard alliances with the Ventrue, the Gangrel, the Brujah, the Garou, and the elders of neighboring domains of Monterey and Salinas she managed to pull the town back together and away from becoming an anarch state. After a dramatic reconstruction and reign, she left the town, for academic reasons. There was a nasty period when the city was ruled by Loh Pan, an ancient Ventrue whose talent for duplicity knew no bounds. During this time, the Kindred faced a powerful convergence of energies at a tree which turned out to be a place of power coveted by a variety of supernatural and celestial forces. Briefly, Loh Pan was replaced by a Brujah Elder named Benjamin, but he was then later deposed by a political coup of Loh Pan's own engineering. Eventually, Loh Pan was driven from the city when it became evident that his ambition was driven by madness. Ursa was accepted by the Gangrel and became a distant but stern father to the blossoming population of undead in the city. A great threat to the domain was the chalice of the Wrym. It was a manifestation of a powerful demon, that managed to permanently blood bond a number of kindred and large number of ghouls of the city. The chalice is widely believed to have been put out of circulation, and all kindred and ghouls that drank from the cup are believed to have been destroyed. Prince Ursa, was by all reports a fair in dispensing justice as well as feared due no doubt to his large stature and deep voice. Although the domain ultimately turned away from him in favor of the master politician Jeremy Archer, the 7th generation Toreador. Jeremy wrested power from Ursa by ultimately convincing him that if it came down to the Canites choosing between Ursa and Jeremy they would ultimately choose Jeremy. Ursa left for Europe under the guise of acting as agent of the Camarilla to pursue their interests. Although not particularly loved by his new subjects, Jeremy kept a solid grip on power by dispensed justice in lethal quantities on an almost weekly basis, on a populous that seemed content to continued to test his limits. During his rein, the Sabbat made a number of forays and attempted incursions into the domain, none of which were notably successful. Other threats to the city of the time included trigger happy Nazis, strained relations with the Garou, almost all out clan war, mages with an attitude, a really mean Salubri and the inquisition hell bent on destroying the kindred of the city. Mean while the Toreador clan (which the prince and the rest of the kindred of the city ignored) were quietly and subtly extending its own power via knowledge of all the goings on of the city. They collectively decided which issues to effectively manipulate behind the scenes. At one point the entire Brujah clan decided for reason unknown to pick on the Toreador clan, almost starting an all out clan war. It has been speculated that is was in part due to the Brujah wanting the Toreador Sub-domain at the time. Perhaps it was because two of the female Brujah expressed some desire to become recognized in the city as Toreador. Tensions remained high for a few months, and an actual clan war was avoided, exactly why is unclear. The most note worthy part of this incident was, that had actual battle come to pass the Toreador of the domain stood better than even chance of defeating, in battle, a collective of Brujah of roughly their number. This was perhaps the first, and possible the last time this could have happened. When the inquisition came to town, they came with a vengeance against the unholy. They waged war with their faith, weapons of faith and some good old fashioned bloodlust. They managed through a verity of methods to keep Santa Carla a kindred free zone for some months. The Prince announced that he was going to leave the city and start a new one, a sort of supernatural B5. The Primogen council was to select a new Prince. In the interim, the city was ruled by a Primogen council. On a side note, although a lofty idea the "supernatural B5" never got off the ground. Although Jeremy Archer did become master of protocol to the inner circle of the Camarilla. Mickey, through a combination of dumb luck and treachery became Prince. It was not the first foolhardy choice the that the domain had made on the subject, but it some ways, some survivors of her rein say it was nearly their last. Shortly after her gaining princedom. Adrian, a Toreador who realized that he was never going to achieve the wealth and power that he craved in Santa Carla and decide to leave. But not before he sold out his clan to a group of Ventrue Anti-Tribune called the "Spogatellies". For this, prince Jeremy Archer as one of his final acts ordered Jon Chronos, the Toreador Primogen to "deal" with Adrian should ever show his face in town again. Adrian returned was promptly incapacitated and staked in very one sided combat with the Toreador Primogen. Several minutes later, after a quick change of clothes, the Prince Mickey told Jon that she wanted that he and Terrence (one of her backers) to fight it out for the position of Seneschal. He told her that she was without honor and flat out refused to demean himself for her inability to decide, and ability to lie. She had promised the position to both, without telling the other. About 15 minutes later Jon was surrounded by a mob, questioning him about the disappearance of Adrien. While it looked like there was no hope of escape, the club that this whole thing stated over ...blew sky high. Ironically, it was because a timer went off which due to Adrian being staked. The mob went off to investigate the explosion. Jon left town and never came back, saved by his worse enemy. Two individuals tried to summon Jon back, both failed. Very soon after Mickey assumed the princedom the domain began to fall apart, piece by piece. The Spogatellies came at the kindred of the city, trying desperately to make the domain their own. The Spogatellies were eventually slaughtered in a brief, but bloody downtown battle. Then Problems with the Garou who were very angry with the dumping of toxic waste of their precious land. This was followed by an arrogant brush off of the government, part of which knows of kindred existence. Additionally a large number of Assimites came to town the same night as the Government decided to retaliate for Prince Mickey and her administration's breach of agreements. The government cleared the streets leaving the three factions, The kindred of the domain, the Assimites, and the Government to fight until only the government well armed and organized was left standing in the mist of carnage the city had never seen. A number of the kindred of the city managed to flee, but most simply meet their end. Perhaps the city
fell from the Spogatelli survivors making a few calls. Others in the know
have speculated that the government and Assamite forces had a single employer.
Still others say that the city simply collapsed in upon it's own rotting
weight. |
