OVERVIEW
OF CLAN SETHIAN:
The Clan of
vampires known to many as the Followers of Set have long been perceived
as a group of Cainites dedicated to the absolutes of corruption
and evil. This is an oversimplification (as are most stereotypes)
beginning the simple fact that the Setites do not see themselves
as "Cainites"; the followers insist that they are a breed apart,
eschewing any notions of descent from a Biblical figure that does
not pertain to their heritage as the successors/servants of the
Aegytpian [classical spelling] Lord of Strength and Darkness.
Several different
cults of Setites exist, many of whom have unique (and, in some cases,
diametrically opposed)views concerning what it means to inherit
Set's Legacy; the Typhonists, Warriors and Serpents of the Light(this
latter case denying Sutekh connections in favor of the Petro aspects
of Voodoo Loa pantheons)being notable examples. This text addresses
a more recent addition to the Setite ideological discourse: the
Sethians.
Founded about
a decade ago by a young Setite scholar and Thaumaturge called Eliot
Cole, the Sethians owe their philosophy to a series of texts and
analyses that indicated (in their view) that Sutekh's original aspect
as a god of Strength, battle and the hunt had primacy over his later
aspect as an avenger against the Aeons(the Setite notion of the
other Antediluvians and their theoretical Divine progenitor[s]).
Originally,
the Sethians had based themselves on a remote island in the Pacific;
recent events have shrunk down their (already small) numbers, effectively
scattering them across the globe, principally within the United
States. Another aspect of the group was their separatist position
within the Clan. This has also fallen by the wayside, as the Sethians
are now considered to be a very focused subgroup of the Warrior
faction.
Philosophy
The Sethians
are distinguished from their parent faction by two essential points:
first, that the primal nature of Sutekh's darkness is only a part
of what makes them Chosen, the other being the strength of discipline
and purpose, and that these two sides must be balanced properly
if the Clan is fulfill its ultimate goal.
The second
pertains to that goal. The Sethians, like many Kindred (and Setites
are known to be in the clear lead on such matters), believe that
a time of great tribulation is coming (or may have already begun);
therefore, each Sethian is supposed to commit himself to the mission
of locating subjects that should, by their inherent traits and potential,
be worthy of surviving the cataclysm, or whatever the crisis will
be, in order to maximize the development of the New World that will
shape itself. No two Sethians seem to agree on the criteria of "worthiness",
however, so this is an issue that has spawned much debate (and sometimes
harsher conflicts) among them.
Additionally,
there seems to be an even more unusual tie between the Sethians
and certain factions of the Tremere clan; a Sethian entering a Camarilla
Domain will usually seek them out first. On many occasions, it is
the Tremere of a Domain that will vouch for the Huntsman, assuring
the city's elders that they are not, in fact, Setites and that they
mean the Domain no harm. Of course, this brings up as many suspicions
as it does reassurances, but the Tremere are a tightlipped about
their knowledge as anyone else.
Rare in the
extreme, Sethians attempt to spread themselves out among the various
groups of Kindred, searching for means to effect either of their
goals; they are ever vigilant; searching for those that may be the
key to the survival of, in their view, the best Kindred, Human and
other beings so that they may protect them. Often, these subjects
opting to guard his or her charge covertly.
Nickname: Huntsmen
Appearance:
Sethians generally dress in a manner that is both practical (for
combat) and will allow them to be taken seriously by those that
they wish to protect. Anything from a well-tailored suit (with hidden
shoulder-holster) from acting as a capo for a Venture Mafioso to
heavy flak jacket and fatigues for traipsing about with a pack of
Gangrel survivalists have been seen. All Sethians have the special
symbol of their clan tattooed somewhere on their person.
Character Creation:
Most Sethians come from a Warrior-oriented backgrounds, although
rumors abound that the first of there line were members of the Followers
of Set (Particularly those following the Path of the Warrior) and
the Serpents of the Light who underwent a dramatic epiphany, so
some of the older members of the Bloodline may have significantly
different concepts. Passionate Natures are predominate (such as
Cavalier, Visionary, Bravo, Celebrant of Architect). Although just
about any type of Demeanor is fair game.
